Ground-Breaking Census Starting in India and the News from Kashmir

Ground-Breaking Census Starting in India and the News from Kashmir2.5 million census-takers will be spreading out across India today in what will be the world’s largest administrative operation. The census conducted this year will be special because the census-takers will be issuing identification cards with pictures. At this time, Indian has no national identification system. Besides biometric data, information on housing areas, electrical statistics, and availability to fresh drinking water will also be noted. The census-takers will also be counting people who sleep in parks and on railway platforms.

The nation-wide census will take eleven months to complete. With the data collected, the Indian government is hoping to improve the living conditions of Indians in all regions.

In other news, four Indian soldiers were killed during firefights with guerillas in the Rajouri district to the south of Kashmir. Indian army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Biplab Nath said Thursday that "six terrorists were killed in another fierce encounter in Rajouri." Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan claim the region in full but rule in part and have fought two wars over it.

The Indian army has stepped up controls near the region because there are hundreds of militants attempting to get into India on a daily basis.
