Bad Blood in Europe

It was rumored last week that Greece might go so far as to sell some of its islands to repay its debts. A pair of German politicians suggested the idea. The Germans are now obviously regretting the retirement of the Deutsche mark, as it would see their participation in the European Union means them handing out their hard earned money to lackadaisical countries like Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

Germany is essentially looking at all of Greece like a bunch of swindlers. Angela Merkel has been tight-lipped and at times even contrary about a possible bailout. Europe is once again ripe with stereotypes: the stingy Germans and the corrupt Greeks. It would seem that the purpose of the European Union right now is failing. The Union is supposed to show solidarity fiscally and to move the country past decades of internal warfare. This crisis could be the beginning of the end.

The recession and corrupt banking are starting to slow the Euro and the solidarity is starting to weaken. If one more country drops its head below water, Germany may be resurrecting her old currency.
